Southwest English Setter Rescue
SWESR would like to thank Nancy B., Debbie O., Traci R. and Fred S. for their generous donations toward Rocco’s medical expenses. Thanks to Karen P. for offering to be Rocco's Virtual Foster mom.
Rocco was surrendered to a shelter by his owners because he had an untreated skin infection. He was scheduled to be euthanized. SWESR was contacted, we pulled him from the shelter and brought him to our vet near Oklahoma City so that treatment could begin immediately.
Update 4/2: Rocco has been staying at the vet clinic since he was pulled from the shelter last Thursday so they can monitor his skin condition. The vet said that it seems to be what started out as an allergy, turned into a hot spot and got increasingly worse since it was never treated.
His back is tender and they had to shave and clean all around the area to help with the healing process. Rocco received a cortisone shot to provide some relief and he is on a daily dose of strong antibiotics. The vet hopes to see some improvement by the 1 week mark (this Thursday).
He should be ready to go to a foster home Thursday or Friday. The healing process could be a matter of weeks to a month or so, depending on how it responds to the antibiotics.
The vet was saddened to know that he was going to be euthanized because of this when it could have been easily treated. He said Rocco is really sweet, just nervous and stressed at the clinic. Going from his home to a shelter to a vet clinic must be scary for him.
He is now up to date on his vaccinations, and tested negative for heartworms and other parasites. He will be neutered when immune system is stronger and his skin condition improves.
He needs to get to a foster home where he can get some much needed rest and relaxation. Please complete an application if you are interested in fostering or adopting Rocco. Click here if you are interested in making a donation toward Rocco's medical expenses. Thank you.
Update 5/11/13: Rocco has arrived at his foster home near Boulder, Colorado. His back has healed well and he will be available soon.
